CrimTrac wins Australian Government e-Award

Minister for Finance and Deregulation, Lindsay Tanner today announced CrimTrac’s National Police Reference System as the winner of the Australian Government’s e‑Award for Excellence in e-Government.

The e-Award recognises the most outstanding initiatives in e-government that have been implemented in the past two years, based on the positive impact they have had on the lives of Australian citizens, the community and business while improving the efficiency and effectiveness of government administration and service delivery.

CrimTrac is the agency responsible for developing information sharing solutions for law enforcement. CrimTrac’s National Police Reference System (NPRS) provides information critical to the day-to-day duties of police and law enforcement agencies.  It provides access to information on persons of interest, allowing police in different jurisdictions to exchange information quickly and securely.

The Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) administers the annual award which was introduced in 2006 to promote excellence in the use of information and communication technology (ICT) at all levels of Australian Government. Ann Steward, the Australian Government Chief Information Officer presented the award to CrimTrac at an ICT Celebration Dinner last night as part of CeBIT Australia at the Sydney Convention Centre.

Lindsay Tanner presented the keynote speech at the e-Government forum at CeBIT Australia on Wednesday morning highlighting the need for collaboration in the effective application of ICT in Government.

Following the presentation of the award to CrimTrac last night, Lindsay Tanner said: “The NPRS is a fantastic example of how by using technology and working together, we can work more effectively across jurisdictional boundaries. “

“By the time the NPRS is rolled out across all of Australia in early 2009, all 50,000 Australian police officers will have access to it. This system will help address the problem of offenders moving interstate to avoid detection.”

“I commend Crimtrac on their achievements in winning the award against such strong competition, and for their excellent work in supporting community policing across Australia.”

Ten finalists were in line for the Award and following the presentation to CrimTrac, three agencies were also recognised for their excellence in e-Government initiatives and received highly commended awards.
