The Rudd Government has today released Sir Peter Gershon’s report on his independent review of the Australian Government's use of information and communication technology (ICT).
Sir Peter consulted extensively with stakeholders from within government, the ICT industry and related representative organisations. He provided his report to Lindsay Tanner, Minister for Finance and Deregulation in August 2008.
The Rudd Government has decided to release the report now ahead of formal Cabinet consideration.
The report provides a very comprehensive analysis of a wide range of issues affecting the Government’s use and management of ICT and also outlines a staged plan to implement his recommendations.
Lindsay Tanner said: “The model proposed by Sir Peter details seven critical areas where can gain greater benefits from and improve the effectiveness of our ICT investments.”
“Sir Peter has recommended that we should improve our ICT governance to improve the effectiveness of its use, tighten our management of business-as-usual ICT operation to improve its efficiency, manage our skills base better, plan for the Government’s overall data centre requirements, interact with the industry more effectively, and ensure that the Government’s own ICT operations are sustainable.”
“Without pre-empting Cabinet’s consideration, the report forms an excellent basis for implementing a series of changes for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of government ICT.”
Sir Peter Gershon said: “My recommendations involve a major program of both administrative reform and cultural change within the Australian Public Service.”
“I am confident that the recommended actions and proposed changes can be successfully implemented over the next two to three years, and will deliver substantial benefits to the Australian Government.”
The Rudd Government is examining Sir Peter’s recommendations closely and will respond to the report in the near future.
