The Australian Government has called for expressions of interest from industry to provide interim and immediate data centre facilities and services.
Minister for Finance and Deregulation, Lindsay Tanner, said the expression of interest was for a limited supply of facilities and services to maintain the ongoing continuity of services during the development of the whole-of-government data centre strategy.
“The Rudd Government is developing a comprehensive strategy to deliver the maximum benefit from our investment and utilisation of data centre resources over the next 10 to 15 years,” Lindsay Tanner said.
“We have already had extensive interactions with industry and agencies to inform this strategy and are considering all the options available to us.”
As part of the recommendations made to the Government in his review of the Australian Government’s use of ICT, Sir Peter Gershon identified the possibility that some agencies may need to access data centre resources during the development of the strategy.
“This approach to market will meet the conditions set out in the ICT Review recommendations, and is consistent with the whole-of-government directions,” Lindsay Tanner said.
The whole-of-government data centre strategy will be considered by the Government later in the year.
