New Chairman for ASC

The Minister for Finance and Deregulation, Lindsay Tanner, today announced the appointment of Vice Admiral Chris Ritchie AO RANR, as the new Chairman of Australia’s submarine and shipbuilding company, ASC Pty Ltd.

Lindsay Tanner said Vice Admiral Ritchie had been appointed to the role following the decision of the current Chairman to not seek re-appointment and would commence on 1 July 2009.

“Vice Admiral Ritchie is currently a member of the ASC Board and his knowledge of the organisation will ensure the transition is a smooth one and assist the ASC in continuing to provide a high level of service to the Australian Defence Force.”

Vice Admiral Ritchie has had an extensive naval career and long standing involvement with the Department of Defence, recently serving in roles that included; Chief of Navy; Chair of the Air Warfare Destroyer Principals’ Council; Chairman of the Australian Defence College Advisory Board Member of the Defence Management Review; and as Commander, Australian Theatre (ADF).

As the former Maritime Commander Australia, Vice Admiral Ritchie will also bring unique insights into the Navy’s operational requirements in respect to the Collins Class submarines and the Hobart Class air warfare destroyers.

Lindsay Tanner thanked Mr John Prescott for his work as ASC Chairman over an eight and a half year period in which the organisation made considerable progress.

“ASC’s continued maintenance of the Collins Class submarines, their successful bid for the tender to build the air warfare destroyers, and their expansion of facilities in both South Australia and Western Australia is a reflection of the great work of Mr Prescott and the current board.”

Vice Admiral Ritchie has been appointed for a three year term.
