Recommendations from the Governance Audit of the Northern Land Council (NLC) were tabled in Parliament yesterday.
The audit was initiated by the Australian Government in order to better understand governance matters of the NLC.
The Office of Evaluation and Audit (Indigenous Programs) in the Department of Finance and Deregulation undertook the audit between March and December 2008.
The audit made eleven recommendations. The NLC has accepted or partially accepted nine of these recommendations.
The Australian Government considers that the recommendations provide a solid framework for ongoing discussions between the Australian Government and the Northern Land Council over the governance and management processes and structures of the NLC.
We look forward to working with the NLC on improvements to the effectiveness of its administration and management in order to deliver on the Rudd Government’s Indigenous policy priorities in the Northern Territory.
