Reports evaluating the performance of Government programs in delivering key services to Indigenous Australians were released today.
Minister for Finance and Deregulation, Lindsay Tanner said the two evaluation and audit reports would provide information and advice to Government on how better outcomes could be delivered for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
"The Federal Government delivers a range of Indigenous-specific services across Australia and it is important that we regularly evaluate the progress of these in achieving outcomes," Lindsay Tanner said.
The Evaluation of Service Delivery in Remote Indigenous Communities and Performance Audit of Australian Hearing Specialist Program for Indigenous Australians were undertaken by the Office of Evaluation and Audit (Indigenous Programs).
Evaluation of Service Delivery in Remote Indigenous Communities
The evaluation of service delivery in remote Indigenous communities focussed on 52 remote communities in the Northern Territory, Western Australia, Queensland and South Australia and sought community organisations' perspectives on how well Federal Government departments are delivering services into these communities.
While the evaluation highlighted the strong relationships between federal government departments and the majority of community organisations, it also identified a number of areas in which improvement could be made. The report contains eight recommendations.
Performance Audit of Australian Hearing Specialist Program for Indigenous Australians
The audit of the hearing specialist program found that it is achieving its objective of providing more flexible and culturally appropriate hearing services to eligible Indigenous Australians but that further refinements to the program’s administration could increase its effectiveness. The audit made eight recommendations.
