Lindsay Tanner, Minister for Finance and Deregulation announced the publication of a new performance audit completed by the Office of Evaluation and Audit (Indigenous Programs).
The Sporting Chance Program, administered by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), aims to use sport as a vehicle to increase the level of engagement of Indigenous students in school and to improve their educational outcomes.
The audit found that there is consistent anecdotal evidence that the program has a positive impact on Indigenous students but the audit was unable to comment on the extent to which academies have improved students enrolment, attendance, retention and engagement because of limited performance data. The audit also found that female participation in the program was low.
DEEWR welcomed the report and is currently addressing the recommendations.
