Response to Productivity Commission Research Report
Annual Review of Regulatory Burdens on Business: Social and Economic Infrastructure Services

Minister for Finance and Deregulation, Lindsay Tanner, today released the Government’s response to the Productivity Commission’s research report into regulatory burdens on social and economic infrastructure services.

The Annual Review of Regulatory Burdens on Business: Social and Economic Infrastructure Services report presented 42 recommendations to reduce regulatory burden in the economic and social infrastructure sector.

“The Government is very supportive of the report’s recommendations and has fully accepted 21 of those recommendations and a further five in principle,” Lindsay Tanner said.

“The majority of the remaining recommendations were related to issues the Government plans to advance through other means or considers the current level of regulation already sufficient.”

The economic and social sector includes key services such as child care, aged care, education, transport, telecommunication and energy.

Two of the report’s key recommendations focused on reducing regulations impacting on aged care facilities and improving information available on child care facilities. The Rudd Government has previously announced the Productivity Commission would undertake an inquiry into aged care and was working on the National Quality Agenda which will enhance information about the quality of the child care services.

Lindsay Tanner said that this was the third in a series of annual reviews on regulatory burdens on business being undertaken by the Productivity Commission.

“This report has identified some key areas in which red tape can be reduced for the social and economic infrastructure sector.  This is in line with our commitment to reduce red tape for all businesses and consumers to improve productivity and support economic growth.”
