Lindsay Tanner, Minister for Finance and Deregulation today announced the appointment of Mr Tony Hyams as the Chairperson to the Australian Reward Investment Alliance (ARIA).
ARIA is the trustee of the Commonwealth’s main civilian superannuation schemes which combined have 480,000 members and $16 billion under management.
Lindsay Tanner said Mr Hyams’ senior corporate experience and sound knowledge of Australian Government superannuation equip him with the necessary credentials for this important role.
He said: “Mr Hyams has had a distinguished career in Banking and Finance and has held a number of senior corporate positions. He is currently Chairperson of the Military Superannuation and Benefits Board of Trustees (MSB Board) and a director of AGEST Super where he is chair of the Investment Committee.”
The appointment of Mr Hyams follows the Rudd Government’s announcement in October 2008 to merge the boards of ARIA, MSB and the Defence Force Retirement and Death Benefits Scheme to form a single trustee board on 1 July 2010.
The new board will be trustee of the main civilian and military super schemes and will have the requisite skills to govern in the best interests of all members. Importantly, civilian and military interests will continue to be represented on the new board.
Lindsay Tanner said: “As Chairperson of both ARIA and the MSB board, Mr Hyams will lead the transition team and be instrumental in preparing for the merger of the two boards commencing on 1 July 2010.
It is the Government’s intention that Mr Hyams be appointed the inaugural Chairperson of the new trustee board in July next year.”
Mr Hyams’ appointment follows the expiration of Ms Susan Doyle’s term earlier in the year.
Lindsay Tanner said Ms Doyle previously held the position of ARIA Chairperson since 2003 and commended her for her contribution to the ARIA board during that time.
