Lindsay Tanner, Minister for Finance and Deregulation today released the Reform of Government Scorecard which summarises the work undertaken in the Finance and Deregulation portfolio between November 2007 and May 2010.
The Rudd Government is committed to improving the business of government and how it delivers services to citizens and business.
Over the past three years, this Government has continued to reform the operations of government to drive efficiencies, deliver better value to taxpayers and contribute to the Government’s fiscal targets.
A dollar saved from reducing waste and inefficiency is a dollar that can be spent on education, health and infrastructure.
Under the Howard Government, there was almost complete decentralisation which led to vast inefficiencies and waste in a variety of core government areas, such as IT, property and travel.
With around $30 billion of government contracts awarded every year, even small improvements in government coordination can deliver substantial dividends.
The attached scorecard provides detailed information on a number of initiatives undertaken so far in terms of better value for money, better regulation, more transparency, better governance, investing in infrastructure and the benefits that have accrued to the Budget.
There is also a section which describes the Rudd Government’s ongoing commitment to improve its operations and deliver greater value to the taxpayer.
