Lindsay Tanner, Minister for Finance and Deregulation today announced the appointment of Rear Admiral of the United States Navy (retired) John “Dugan” Shipway as a director to the Board of Australia’s premier submarine and shipbuilding company, ASC Pty Ltd.
Rear Admiral Shipway has been appointed for a three year term and commenced his appointment from 18 June 2010. This brings the total ASC Board membership to eight.
Mr Shipway retired as a Rear Admiral of the United States Navy after 35 years service which included serving as a submarine commander and recently retired as President of General Dynamics’ Bath Iron Works shipyard in Maine, in the United States of America.
Rear Admiral Shipway has extensive experience in building ships for the United States Navy, which are very similar in size to the Air Warfare Destroyers that ASC is building for the Royal Australian Navy.
Rear Admiral Shipway was previously Vice President for submarine support at General Dynamics Electric Boat, during which time he was involved in the USA support to the Collins Class Submarine program.
Lindsay Tanner said: “The appointment of Mr Shipway brings exceptional skills and experience in the naval industry to ASC’s Board, and will enhance the Board’s high level of expertise and standards of governance.”

ASC’s Board has guided the company through a number of significant achievements over recent years including guiding the company in its oversight of the Collins Class submarine maintenance contract; the start of construction of the Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyers; and the expansion of facilities in both South Australia and Western Australia.
Lindsay Tanner said: “The distinguished background of Rear Admiral Shipway and the unique nature of his career will make him an excellent addition to the Board, and I look forward to his strong contribution to ASC in the future.”
